Hrothgar had an unusual start to life, even by barbarian standards. He was born into a noble Dwarven family well respected for their skill in battle.
At the age of two, his home was attacked and overrun by an Orc clan. When it was apparent that the battle was lost, his mother hid him in an old basket, in the hopes it would be overlooked during the looting. There was no such luck in store. A female Orc named Krugga found him. In a strange turn of events, she decided to keep the young dwarf alive and raise him. Hrothgar’s status in the clan was not made official for many years, and it remained unclear whether he was a slave or son. Since Orcs have a reputation for abuse of the young, it didn’t matter much.
Raised away from traditional Dwarven culture of any kind, Hrothgar soon picked up the violent and wild ways of his foster mother. His strength and brutality eventually won Hrothgar official status in the clan, but also many enemies. By his 20th year, it became apparent that Hrothgar’s presence would not be tolerated much longer. He fled the clan to survive. He was eventually discovered in the wilds by a group of Dwarves, who were horrified by his starved frame and wild behaviour. They took the young Dwarf in as one of there own and attempted rehabilitation.
There were partially successful in taming his more violent outbursts, however Hrothgar was by no means easily integrated back into Dwarven society. He earned the name “Hrothgar the Filthy”.Fellow Dwarves looked at him with pity while he was a child, but that pity turned to disgust and fear as he entered adulthood. As soon as he was able, Hrothgar left Dwarven society to adventure.
